Lucia Berlin a jej Manuál pre upratovačky je udivujúco krásna zbierka poviedok. Neuveriteľné sa stáva pravdivým. Neznesiteľnosť v peknom, príbehy, pri ktorých sa trhajú zuby, vymýšľajú priatelia, kde sa často plače v kúte tmavej izby. Ale práve tam je toľká krásnosť, v momentoch najväčšieho trápenia, kde je bytosť ozajská, boľavá duša najúprimnejšia. Áno, životu ťažko porozumieť, často sa neskutočným zdá a predsa je prítomnosť dlhotrvajúca a skutočná. No ťažšie príbehy sa ľahšie s humorom žijú, možno preto je ho v tom autorkinom hodne. A i tak je to všetko vymyslená skutočnosť. Aké mätúce, aké výstižné!

Unbearable in beauty, stories which make ones pull their teeth out, make up friends, cry in the corner of a dark room. And that´s where the beauty lies, in those moments of the biggest suffering when a human being is true and hurting soul is honest. Yes, it is hard to understand life, it even seems unreal, but still, its present is longlasting and real. Tough stories are easier to live with humour, maybe that is why we can find so much of it in the author´s one. Still, it is all just a made-up reality. How confusing, how concise!
